artist statement: the collector's badge
who am i? who are you? are we alike? what do we share? we are artists. we are educators. we are collectors. collectors typically collect items with personal meaning. in my work as a metalsmith, the designs i am currently working on use the spoon shape as a metaphor for the individual. spoons are the common utensils of everyday life. each spoon that i make is carefully hand forged, each different, and each unique. they are made of silver, steel and gold. placing the spoons in a horizontal line indicates equal status in the group. the weight of the piece lends itself to be worn around the neck. my interpretation of this yoke indicates responsibility. it is a badge of optimism illustrating that each of us carries the responsibility of equality.
